A boat that has to manuver trough water without colliding with any obstacles doesn't sound scary to you? Well if you turn off the light, everything gets scary easily. That's what we did in the game “Fisherman's Friend”.
We were tasked to create a 2D game with a maximum of three input keys and one gameplay mechanic. After a few prototypes, we decided to go with a top-down perspective scrolling game and got hooked with the idea of a fisher trying to reach “the other side” of a lake.
After we built and tested this idea, we realized that it wasn’t challenging enough. That's when we introduced darkness. The player only can see the close surroundings of the boat and is forced to throw lanterns into the darkness to plan their route.
As a player of this game you must reach the shore without drowning from obstacles like sharks, sprouts or stones. You’re only able to steer left and right and throw lanterns into the darkness. If you can reach the other side, there will be a surprise waiting for you ;)
